Holiday gift giving guide offers ideas for both tangible and intangible treats for the Yogi on your list.

The best place to start with any gift-giving is careful attention to what matters most to the person you wish to bestow a gift upon.

One suggestion for this would be to complete some sort of exercise together, such as the questions described in Mindful and Meaningful Holidays, to identify what really matters to each member of the family this season.

It may turn out that the intangible gifts of quality time spent in one another’s company are far more important to your loved ones than the kind of gifts you wrap and embellish with bows.

However, there is something to be said for having the right gift to present for unwrapping as well, so here is an outline of some ideas of either kind:

Tangible Gift Ideas

  • If your Yogi has been practicing for a while, it is likely he or she already owns a yoga mat or yoga-specific clothing. However, if they don’t have a sling or Yoga mat bag, that may be an appropriate choice – something that makes their equipment a bit more portable.
  • Yoga Accessories are also a good idea – especially for those who prefer to practice at home. Simple props such as straps or blocks, or even blankets bolsters or chairs would certainly be appreciated.
  • For a special treat, an aromatherapy eye pillow makes every Final Relaxation Pose (Savasana) a wonderful getaway.
  • For the studious Yogi, an illuminative and innovative reference manual such as Yoga Anatomy by Leslie Kaminoff would be invaluable for years to come.
  • There are also countless thoughtful ideas for the crafty gift giver.
  • And of course, the old holiday standby - Gift Certificates from a yogi’s favorite studio for a private yoga session or a massage would always be appreciated.

Intangible Gift Ideas

  • If your family is inspired by the holiday season’s spirit of giving, spending time to volunteer together could be a wonderful new holiday tradition, giving the gift of time and effort to others.
  • Most students of yoga enjoy their practice so much they would love to share the benefits with the people they love. Perhaps making arrangements to join your yogi in class would show that you understand how important their practice is, and that you’d like to understand it better.
  • Give the gift of time – Help consolidate errands, offer a packet of coupons toward household chores, or just create some “time off” where you can enjoy one another’s company.
  • Many couples and friends choose to agree not to exchange gifts with one another, and instead choose something you each would like to do together – anything goes! From attending the annual “Nutcracker” performance to a hockey game, from a meal at a favorite restaurant to ice-skating or stargazing.

Most of all, don't forget to have some fun with it!

Best wishes for a safe and happy holiday!
